Do you have pain and stiffness when walking or getting up from a chair?

These symptoms bring many patients to the joint replacement program at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.  We offer contemporary knee and hip replacements designed to relieve pain and restore mobility to those suffering from arthritis and other conditions that affect these joints.  Our affiliated board-certified orthopedic surgeons are specially-trained to evaluate and treat hip and knee problems.  This is one of many orthopedic services offered at the hospital.

 What is Joint Replacement?

Joint replacement is performed when an arthritic or damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint called a prosthesis. The goal is to relieve pain caused by the damage done to the cartilage. A  physical examination, laboratory tests and x-rays help show the extent of damage to the joint.  Total joint replacement may be considered if other treatment options do not relieve pain.

How Does The Artificial Joint Work?

Materials used in a total joint replacement are designed to enable the joint to move like your normal joint. The prosthesis is generally composed of two parts: a metal piece that fits closely into a
matching sturdy plastic piece.  Although hip and knee replacements are the most common, joint replacement can be performed on the ankle, foot, shoulder, elbow and fingers.

After Surgery

The patient is generally encouraged to use the new joint soon after surgery.  According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, you will often stand and begin walking the day after surgery.  At first, you will walk with crutches or cane.  Most patients have some temporary pain in the replaced joint.  Exercise is an important part of the recovery process.

Patient Care & Education

A benefit of having joint replacement at PBGMC is patient education.  A nurse case manager will consult with you, discussing the procedure and the therapeutic activities necessary to recover fully.  The case manager will answer questions and help you during recovery.
