What are they going through?

Different people respond in different ways to illness and pain. What your loved one is experiencing may be something you don’t quite understand. To best help them:

Offer a sympathetic ear. Don’t pry into your loved one’s thoughts or feelings, but be available when he or she is ready to open up.

Educate yourself. Find out more about your loved one’s condition or procedure, and ask his or her medical professionals if ever you’re unsure of anything.

Be available. Recovering from illness, injury or surgery can be overwhelming for both the patient and their loved ones. Stay attentive as much as your time and energy allows. Every moment of support makes a positive difference.
