Internist becomes chief of staff at Gardens Medical

“There was always a beeper going off,” he remembered. The sound didn’t bother him, he said, because he realized it meant his mother, “the healer,” was helping people feel better.“I didn’t know which to be,” he said. Eventually, he opted for the medical field.
Today, Dr. Salib is an internist with a private practice in North Palm Beach. Recently, he became chief of staff at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, a hospital he has been associated with for eight years.
As chief of staff, Dr. Salib leads the hospital’s medical staff, which includes about 700 doctors, and is a member of the hospital’s board of directors.
He is a liaison between the hospital’s administrative staff and its medical staff members. Dr. Salib will play a key role in making continuous quality improvements, as well as provide medical staff input for all major expansion and renovation projects.
“Dr. Salib was elected because of his commitment to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and his continued perseverance to deliver expert care to our community,” said Dianne Goldenberg, the hospital’s former CEO. “He will serve as an excellent representative for our medical staff.”
Having moved to the U.S. in 1998, Dr. Salib initially lived in Michigan, where his aunt lived.
He did his residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. But the weather didn’t agree with him at either of those locales.
He took his first job in Las Vegas and eventually moved to Florida to be closer to relatives. He found both those climates more amenable.
Dr. Salib earned an executive MBA degree in healthcare management from the University of Miami and graduated from medical school at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. He is an associate of both the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Salib and his wife, a banker, live in Wellington with their two children.
Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is a 199-bed acute care hospital serving the Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast for more than 45 years.
The hospital was the first in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast to perform open-heart surgery and has since remained one of the area’s leading heart hospitals, having performed over 16,000 open-heart surgeries and more than 100,000 cardiac catheterizations to date.

What brought me to Florida: Family, cousins, uncle and aunts. My job today: Private practice, Family Medical Center, internal medicine in Palm Beach Gardens.
My first job and what it taught me: My first job out of residency was in Las Vegas serving the poor and needy where there was a physician shortage in certain area. I saw how practicing medicine, even in its simplest form, can make a difference in patient’s life. Resources were limited but the appreciation of patients and their families was priceless.
A career highlight: Getting elected by my peers to be chief of staff at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. Earning the trust of my colleagues for such an honorable position is definitely the highlight of my career.
Hobbies: Riding my bicycle and chasing my 3- and 5-year-old children.
The spark or seminal moment that made me decide on my chosen field: Growing up in a household where my mother, a nephrologist, was everyone’s “healer.” I got introduced to the art of medicine, which is not just writing a prescription. It is a passion and a life mission, it is listening and providing comfort. Sometimes that is all the patient is looking for.
Best advice for someone looking to make it in my field: Be honest and let your patients know you will do your best to help them, sometimes it might not work but they will always appreciate your sincere efforts.
