Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center Celebrates 500th Mako SmartRobotics™ Surgery Milestone

Apr 25, 2024

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center (PBGMC) is announcing it has completed and surpassed its 500th Mako SmartRobotics™ surgery. Dr. Robert Avino, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee full and partial replacement, performed the milestone procedure. He completed the first Mako SmartRobotics™ procedure at PBGMC in September 2022.

Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is the only hospital in Palm Beach County to own two Mako SmartRobotics™ systems.

Mako SmartRobotics™ is an innovative, minimally invasive technology that offers a more precise and consistent outcome for a range of procedures, including partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, and total hip replacement. Patients undergoing surgery with the Mako system may benefit from shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, and smaller incisions. Many patients return to an active lifestyle within weeks of their procedure, thanks to the enhanced precision and reduced invasiveness of Mako SmartRobotics™ technology.

The Mako SmartRobotics™ system enables surgeons to treat osteoarthritis at earlier stages with greater precision, preserving more of the patient's natural joint and facilitating a more natural post-operative motion. This is particularly significant as osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and a leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

PBGMC interim CEO Libby Flippo said, “We have invested in some of the latest technologies so we can give our patients the best chance at a speedy and full recovery. The Mako is one of the tools we are proud to offer. Achieving 500 surgeries underscores our hospital’s commitment to quality outcomes for our patients.”

The Center for Joint and Spine Care at PBGMC is certified by The Joint Commission for hip and knee surgeries and is designated as a Blue Distinction Center +.
