Recognizing Men’s Health in June

Jun 12, 2023

Men’s Health Month runs the entire month of June, so it’s a perfect time to remind the community that at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center we have men’s health needs covered, including urology.

Urology focuses on anything related to the urinary tract and the surrounding organs. At PBGMC, we have seven urologists on staff, so no matter when you need our help, we can treat every aspect of urology, from infertility to robotic oncology.

We also provide kidney stone treatment with the latest technology. We own our own laser, so if you come to us to have your kidney stone removed, we can do it seven days a week, something that we are proud to offer.

“Not every hospital can say they own their own laser to treat kidney stones, so having one in house means that we don’t need to contract with a company to bring in one when a patient shows up with a kidney stone. We can get to work right away,” Dr. Sean L. Sawh, MD, FACS, urologist and Chief of Surgery and Urology at PBGMC, told me.

Dr. Antonio Beltran, a urologist with the Palm Beach Health Network Physician Group and on-staff at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, emphasizes that Men’s Health Month is an important time to remind men to take control of their health.

“Men’s health month is an important reminder for men to talk with their doctor about prostate cancer screening, learn the early signs of testicular disease and schedule an appointment with a urologist for any type of urologic condition or ailment affecting their quality of life,” said. Dr. Beltran.

According to the American Urological Association, the benefits of screening include finding and treating a prostate cancer before it has metastasized outside of the prostate. The Urology Care Foundation generally recommends prostate cancer screening for men between the ages of 55-69. Some men who are at higher risk for prostate cancer should consider screening as early as age 40-45. Talk to your primary care doctor and know your risk.

Testicular cancer can affect males at any age, but it most often found in men age 15 to 44 years. Learn about the early signs of the disease and how to do a testicular self-exam and talk with your doctor if there is a suspicious lump, swelling or pain in the area.
