Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center offers a minimally-invasive alternative therapy for patients suffering from uterine fibroids. The goal of uterine fibroid embolization is to avoid surgery and preserve the woman’s uterus.

What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Small particles are injected through a catheter to block the flow of blood to the fibroids. This process deprives the fibroids of the oxygen and nutrients required for them to grow. As a result, the procedure is designed to ultimately shrink the fibroids. Patients typically need to stay in the hospital overnight, but some can go home day of, and most can resume their normal activities within 7 to 10 days.

Why is Uterine Fibroid Embolization Important?

Uterine fibroids are very common, and for many women, can cause symptoms that affect their physical and sexual functioning, energy and sleep. The uterine fibroid embolization procedure is designed to offer several benefits including:

  • Avoidance of hormone therapy or surgery
  • Virtually no blood loss
  • Patients experience faster recovery times than after surgery

Who are Possible Candidates for Uterine Fibroid Embolization?

Those who may be eligible candidates and could benefit from this procedure include:

  • Women suffering from symptomatic fibroids
  • Those with single or multiple fibroids
  • Patients with submucosal, subserosal or intramural fibroids
  • Individuals who do not desire surgery and are pursuing hysterectomy or myomectomy alternatives
  • Women with heavy, prolonged menstrual periods and unusual monthly bleeding
  • Those with urinary issues, such as blockage of urine flow and urinary frequency
  • Patients experiencing pain, pressure and discomfort in the pelvis
