What Is Neurology?
Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Physicians specializing in the field of neurology are called neurologists and are trained to diagnose, treat and manage patients with neurological disorders, as well as some conditions in the musculoskeletal system.
What Are the Most Common Neurological Symptoms?
Neurological symptoms may occur due to bacteria, viruses and fungal and parasitic infections or as the immune system’s response to these potential offenders. Some of the most common symptoms of a neurological condition are as follows:
A change in sensation
Balance or coordination issues
Numbness in the legs and/or arms
Problems with your sense of touch, vision or smell
When Should You See a Neurologist?
You should see a neurologist if you begin to experience something as seemingly harmless as recurring headaches to more worrisome conditions such as a seizure or limb numbness. Neurologists help diagnose, prevent and treat the following conditions:
Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
Amylotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease)
Transient Ischemic Attack
Infections of the Brain
Brain Meninges (Meningitis)
Spinal Cord (Myelitis)
Growths or Tumors of the Brain, Spinal Cord or the Peripheral Nerves
Demyelinating Diseases of the Central Nervous System
Spinal Cord Disorders
Disorders of Peripheral Nerves, Muscles and Neuromuscular Junctions
Traumatic Injuries to the Brain, Spinal Cord and Peripheral Nerves
